CZS first outdoor summer camp / Lớp trại hè ngoài trời

In June, my parents had registered for my siblings and I an Outdoor Camp. Even though the camp was only 4 days, it was really worth it!

Day 1: We arrived at Tatlow Park where we met our teachers. There are 2 teachers and a supervisor. Surprisingly, the supervisor is only 16 years old. It’s was pretty weird calling her Miss.

We stayed in the Park for the most of the day. Doing some morning yoga (which I skiped), eating, etc. I brought a book with me and read it throughout the day, avoiding a lot of group actitivies. My mom was not happy about that at all.

In the end of the day, we went to a hidden beach. It was really close to the Volunteer Park. This beach is a pretty popular place for teens and young adults. Since the beach is way too rocky, the marine police (??) can’t come on shore. Therefore, people smoke and drink here illegally.

Morning Yoga! Guess where I am.
That’s the hidden beach. It was pretty cool!

Day 2: On day 2, we started the the Volunteer Park (as usual) and started to walk our way towards the Hasting Mill Park. It was a 20 minute walk. On our way, we saw a park named Point Grey Road Park. The park was downhill soooo…. we rolled down. It was super fun and fast! Being unable to stop yourself from rolling and laughing all the way! Everyone had fun except for my sister, who insisted on sitting and watching everyone.

Later we arrived at the Hastings Mill Park. I think the park was named after the Hastings Mill, he oldest building in Vancouver. Our teacher also told us stories related to the Hastings Mill.

Did you know that the Hastings Mill was saved by the wife of the owner? A few months after Vancouver (before it was named Granville) was a city, there was a big fire that burned everything down. The wife of the owner of the Hastings Mill told everyone to throw water on the outside of the Mill. As weird as it sounds, the Hasting Mill was the last building standing. Bet you didn’t know that!

Day 3: On the 3rd day, the weather did not want to cooperate. Our teacher told us to bring money so we could buy tickets to visit the Maritime Museum. The museum was sooooo cool! Real treasure, a restored ship, artifacts and much more.

Vancouver Maritime Museum!! I know it looks small, but don’t judge a book by it’s cover!

My favorite part was the the ship. Her name was St. Roch (I don’t know why they call it her)Since we couldn’t go inside, there was a visulizer outside the ship. It was so fascinating!

Ahoy, Me Hearties!!! St. Roch here!! All aboard!!!

From the outside, the museum looked pretty small. But once you come inside, it looks so much bigger! I had to explore every room in the museum before I wanted to go out.

They were also had a souvenir section. They had this super cute anchor necklace from Glee! I wanted to buy it so much! But my parents didn’t let me.

Day 4: On the last day, we went hiking in Jericho Park! It was really fun and memorable because I learnt a lot about plants, and I got to explore Jericho Park! The only thing I wasn’t too happy about is the weather. Apparently, the clouds really needed to use the bathroom that day. But in the hike, I got to eat salmon berries, meet pixies (eh) and hike.

It was a really long and wet hike but I had a lot of fun and excitement! I got to make friends with nature. I got to learn a little bit about salmon berries, morning glory, Kitsilano Pool, and more but I probably forgot about it. hehe

Since we started at the Volunteer Park like usual, we had 30-40 minutes of walking. We took breaks to look at view, rest, lunch and other random reasons we could think of.

That’s a picture of us having lunch. Our teacher is sitting on the bench.

In the end, we were all tired but there came our principle and she brought homemade banana bread, cookies and hot chocolate! Yum! I loved her homemade banana bread and the cookies. Because I don’t really like hot drinks, I didn’t really drink the hot chocolate.

Over the 4 days, I discovered some of my new favorite places! The hidden beach, the Rolling Park (Point Grey Road Park), Hastings Mill, Maritime Museum and Jericho Park.

That was my experience for my first summer camp of 2020! I would love to do it again but maybe this time, explore different places.
